MONTREAL — Almost nothing about university life will look the same this year: students will work from home, classrooms and libraries will be closed, and most activities are off-limits. Mandatory student fees are not going down at Montreal English universities, even though these largely fund on-campus services. Big data and the growing popularity of online dating sites may be reshaping a fundamental human activity: finding a mate, or at least a date. Yet a new study in Management Science finds that certain longstanding social norms persist, even online. In a large-scale experiment conducted through a major North American online dating website, a team of management scholars from Canada, the U. Out of , randomly selected new users, 50, were given free access to the feature for a month, enabling them to view profiles of other users without leaving telltale digital traces.
The researchers expected the anonymity feature to lower social inhibitions — and apparently it did. Compared to the control group, users with anonymous browsing viewed more profiles. They were also more likely to check out potential same-sex and interracial matches. Surprisingly, however, users who browsed anonymously also wound up with fewer matches defined as a sequence of at least three messages exchanged between users than their non-anonymous counterparts.

Gilla Shapiro studies clinical psychology at McGill. Gilla became interested in understanding and promoting sexual health during her doctoral research examining the relationship between sexually transmitted diseases such as HPV and cancer prevention. You published a paper about Tinder use and risky sexual behavior, what did you find? We found a link between Tinder use and risky sexual behaviours such as having multiple sexual partners, and engaging in non-consensual sex.
Given the recent public discussion regarding sexual assault and the importance of consent, seen in MeToo, we wanted to increase awareness of the potential role of online dating culture in risky sexual behaviours. I want to stress that this is a correlational study, we are able to report a link but not causality concerning Tinder use and risky areas of sexual behaviour. More research is needed to determine whether it is Tinder use—or the type of person who uses Tinder—or both—that are causally linked to the risky behaviours we have found associated with Tinder use.
In , the Rhode Island Department of Health published a press release that attributed increase in sexually transmitted diseases STDs to better detection as well as high-risk behaviours such as “social media to arrange casual and anonymous sexual encounters”. We became interested in whether or not this was true. As well, our lab’s research centered on understanding the prevention of sexually transmitted infections particularly HPV.
The relationship between Tinder use and non-consensual sex was particularly notable. A few things also struck us: First, females and sexual minorities were more likely to report non-consensual sex. We need to examine differences in Tinder use and risky sexual behaviours including by gender, age, and sexual orientation.

We are becoming more and more dependent on it: the way we communicate long distance messages, the way we express our opinions and especially the way we meet new people, is now quicker, easier and cheaper than ever.
This fascinating topic is what our research is designed to study. What our team is most interested in, is the impact technology has had on one of the most crucial aspects of human interaction: dating, and consequently, the phenomenon of online dating. Although it used to be taboo, online dating is now becoming widely accepted in developed societies, making our research relevant to current societal dynamics. Because it affects our generation more than any other before, our team has decided to focus its research on university-level students.
Our research will examine the correlation between usage of online dating service and the perception of said services. Our team expects to find a positive correlation between usage and perception; in other words, we hypothesize that a person who uses online dating services, will have a more positive perception about said services than an individual who does not utilize such services.
We expect our IV usage to positively influence our DV perception , a relationship which will constitute our main hypothesis. Our team believes that, after reviewing the existing literature, it is the 18 to 29 age range which is most affected by the rise of online dating, and specifically in a positive way because it combines our interest in dating with technology, in a cheap and quick way.

Nearly every evening, no matter how frigid the air outside, a warm, enchanting glow emanates from Le Majestique Montreal: a popular bar in the Jewish Quarter of St. Beneath a row of incandescent light bulbs, couples sit on eclectic, mismatched stools, dining on oysters and white wine. In recent years, travel brochures and magazines have commented on Montreal being a nexus of love and charming date spots.
Between ice skating on Beaver Lake in the winter and strolls through Atwater Market in the summer, it is not surprising how many view Montreal as the ideal weekend getaway for lovestruck couples. Whether by virtue of its enormous size or its young, achievement-driven student body, McGill today facilitates a culture of anonymous, casual sex, more so than it does intimate long-term relationships. Young people today are not only having less sex than they have in the past, but this sex is becoming increasingly transactional.

McGill University is located on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg nations. McMUN honours, recognizes and respects these nations as the traditional stewards of the lands and waters on which we meet today. These topics will be delved into further during the conference and in our conference packages, but for more information on Indigenous territories in Canada we invite you to visit native-land.
McMUN has a long history of being Canada’s premier Model UN conference, and it stands in part as a testament to the hard work and dedication of all those involved in its planning. For over thirty years, McMUN has offered students a platform for debate, diplomacy, and problem-solving through its committees. These committees provide the perfect mix of rigour and innovation our conference is known for.
In our Specialized Agencies, delegates will participate in an exciting new New York Times Editorial Board committee, which will challenge delegates to produce journalistic content. Whatever the committee, we are planning to deliver intellectually engaging and fast-paced settings for debate, which is the hallmark of the McMUN committee experience. As well, McMUN prides itself on providing a fantastic experience for delegates both in and out of the committee room.
At the GLF, delegates will get to meet professionals and experts in the field, for an inspiring discussion and cocktail. McMUN also offers some of the most well-known social events.
